The most common cause of female infertility is ovulation problems due to:

  • Hormone imbalance
  • Tumour or cysts
  • Eating disorders such as anorexia or bulimia
  • Thyroid dysfunction
  • Excess weight
  • Stress
  • Intense exercise that causes a significant loss of body fat
  • Extremely brief menstrual cycles
  • Alcohol or drug use

Another cause for infertility among women is the damaged caused to her fallopian tubes or uterus.  This can be caused by one or more of the following:

  • Pelvic inflammatory disease
  • A previous infection
  • Polyps in the uterus
  • Endometriosis or fibroids
  • Scar tissue or adhesions
  • Chronic medical conditions
  • A previous ectopic (tubal) pregnancy
  • A birth defect
  • DES syndrome (The medication DES, given to women to prevent miscarriage or premature birth can result in fertility problems for their children)

Further, abnormal cervical mucus can also cause infertility. It can prevent the sperm from reaching the egg or make it more difficult for the sperm to penetrate the egg.

  • A urine or blood test to check for infections or hormone problems, including thyroid function
  • Tracking ovulation cycles over a period of months to assess the woman’s fertility status.
  • Pelvic exam and breast exam
  • Ultrasound of the uterus and ovaries. (May be done vaginally or abdominally)
  • Laparoscopy to rule out blockages
  • HSG (an x-ray used in conjunction with a coloured liquid inserted into the fallopian tubes making it easier for the technician to check for blockages)
  • Hysteroscopy to look for uterine abnormalities)
  • Sonohysterogram (combines ultrasound and saline injected into the uterus to look for abnormalities)

The course of treatment is prescribed after a thorough consultation and review of the test results. In some cases, oral medicines and a modified diet can rectify the problem.

The Ayurvedic medicine SOULMATE, a combination of 14 herbs, is prescribed to:

  • strengthen the uterus
  • prevent miscarriages
  • correct ovulation problems
  • purify blood
  • relieve pain during periods
  • correct amenorrhea

For more complicated cases, a full course of therapy is recommended. The treatment lasts for a period of 41 days. The treatment protocol includes:

  • Kashaya dhara.
  • Application of medicated oil formulated specifically for infertility.
  • A medicated ghee taken orally. (The ghee is infused with medicines that help the woman conceive)
  • Medicines for oral consumption are prescribed based on individual needs.
  • Diet modifications are made based on individual needs.

Panchakarma treatments as necessary.
