The liver, located in the upper right side of the abdomen, performs several life-sustaining functions. It processes nutrients, produces proteins and stores sugar or glycogen. This organ also controls the body’s hormone levels, blood sugar, cholesterol and fluid retention functions. The liver filters unwanted substances and helps the body fight infection.

Book an AppointmentAccording to Ayurveda, the liver is composed of five bhutagnis (digestive fires) that correspond to the five elements – earth, fire, water, air and space. Each of these bhutagnis specialise in digesting a particular element in the food and transforming its Rasa Dhatu (chyle) to Raktha Dhatu (blood tissue). If this digestive fire is not proper, then the Rasa Dhatu will not be properly converted into Raktha Dhatu (blood tissue), and toxins will enter the blood.
The excess toxins stored in the liver may initially show symptoms like hypercholesterolemia, hypoglycemia, constipation, digestive problems, or fatigue. If the imbalance continues for a long duration, serious diseases of the liver like hepatitis, cirrhosis and cancer may develop.
Alcoholism causes scar tissue to develop in the healthy liver tissues, causing Alcoholic Fatty Liver Disease. This prevents blood from flowing through the liver and prevents it from functioning properly.
Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease (NAFLD) also called hepatic steatosis is a manifestation of overconsumption of carbohydrates like processed grains and simple sugars. This compels the body to produce excess insulin, which leads to fat deposition in the liver. Histological features of NAFLD range from Grade1 fatty liver to Grade 3 fatty liver, progressive fibrosis and liver failure.
An ultrasound or MRI of the liver and blood tests are done to check for cirrhosis. In some cases biopsy is required to know the level of scarring.
In a patient with diseased liver, the blood test will show some of the following:
